Memory Games for Kids at Home

A useful memory game gives a child something clear to notice, remember, compare, and try again. These ideas connect everyday play with the memory activities available in Zivaro.

A proper memory game doesn't have to be difficult or long. Start with a few images, sounds or locations that the child understands, give time to observe and try, and add load only when he already uses some way of remembering. The goal is for the child to look for a connection, go back to the information he saw or heard and try again - not for him to guess quickly.

What exactly does the child need to remember in the game?

Before raising a difficulty, check the type of information: image, sound, location or order. Each of them requires a different way of observing.

Photo and detail

Remember a color, shape or small detail and find the same image or change between two situations.

Location and route

Remembering where an item appeared, where a couple is or which way we went.

Sound and melody

Listen to a sound, recognize it again or keep the order of a short auditory sequence.

Relationship between items

Connect a capital letter to a small one, an exercise to a result or two pictures that belong to the same idea.

Not every mistake is forgotten: Sometimes the child remembers the place but still does not understand the connection between the two items. In such a case, the content is simplified, not just reduced to the number of cards.

How do you give a hint without revealing the answer?

A good cue brings the child back to what he has already seen or heard

  1. 1

    Stop for a moment

Give the child time to search the memory before speaking or pointing.

  2. 2

    Ask about the clue

"What color was there?" or "What did we hear before?" Instead of saying where the answer is.

  3. 3

    Narrowing down options

Leave two options and ask to compare them according to one detail.

  4. 4

    Change the next round

If the hint didn't help, reduce items or waiting time and try again in a short game.

You should avoid acceleration: "You already know" or a quick point to the spot passes the job to an adult. It is better to show a search method once and then let the child use it.

Five short memory games you can do at home

Without special equipment and without turning the game into a test

What's gone?

Place four objects, cover and remove one. The child says what is missing and explains where he was.

Repeat the beat

Tap a short sequence of claps or sounds and ask to repeat it in the same order.

A route in three steps

Say a short way in the house - for example a chair, a door, a table - and the child performs in order.

A story in pictures

Arrange three pictures, hide and ask to reproduce what happened at the beginning, middle and end.

A pair with meaning

Match an uppercase letter to a lowercase letter, a number to a quantity or an instrument to a sound and explain what connects the pair.

Questions about memory games for children

Short answers for parents

At what age can you start a memory game?

You can start when the child understands that he needs to find something he has already seen or heard. For young children use two clear pairs or a short game of disappearing object.

How many cards should you put at the start?

Start with an amount that allows the child to find at least some of the pairs. If there is a consecutive guess, a pair is taken down; If everything is found immediately, add only one pair.

How do you know if the game is too hard?

The child fails to use any hints, forgets the purpose of the game, guesses in sequence or gets frustrated before finishing a short round. In such a situation, load is reduced.

Should you give the child time to observe before covering?

Yes. Color, shape and location can even be described together. Later, the observation time is gradually shortened if the child is already using a way of remembering.

Which is better — a game with pictures or with sounds?

Both are suitable but require different information. You can start with a type where the rule is clear to the child, and later add a new type without mixing several challenges at once.

What do you do if the child always chooses the same place?

Is asked which detail he remembers from the card and narrows it down to two options. If he continues to guess, fewer cards are returned and a longer observation time.

Should every mistake be corrected immediately?

No. Give yourself a moment to remember and ask a question that brings you back to a detail, a sound or a location. If the child still does not know, show the connection and try again in a short round.

How long should a memory game last?

There is no fixed time. It is better to stop after a short round where the child is still participating and ready to try, and not to continue until tiredness or frustration.

Does a memory game improve concentration?

The game requires attention to the task and retention of information for a short time, but is not a diagnostic tool and does not guarantee a clinical or therapeutic change in concentration.

How do you combine a digital game with a game at home?

After an activity of pairs, sounds or location choose one idea and make a short version with objects, pictures or clapping. Thus the same way of remembering appears in another context.
